About Alex Kirkpatrick

Alex's sculptures expose the complex and beautiful structures found within seashells. Each piece is made entirely in his workshop, from the first carving of clay, through lost wax casting to the final polishing of the bronze. Starting from wax casts of the original clay sculpture the shells are carved with individual patterns making every single one unique. Since training as a materials scientist at Sheffield University, Alex has been particularly interested in the point of intersection between science and art. He began to combine these elements through his passion for metal-work, building his own foundry and using the knowledge and skills developed during his degree to explore the delicate mathematical forms of seashells using luminously polished and patinated bronze.
